  • About the role

  • Our Regulatory team is recruiting experienced legal assessors to provide advice to regulatory panels and support them with the drafting of their decisions.

    We are recognised in both Chambers and Legal 500 as a highly regarded team specialising in advising professional regulators. Our clients include regulators in number of sectors including law, health and social care, accountancy and education.
     
    Part of our work involves providing specialist legal assessor services to clients, supporting their disciplinary/regulatory panels during hearings with legal advice and drafting skills. Our legal assessors support complex hearings covering a range of allegations, including sexual misconduct. They are highly skilled at supporting vulnerable people and unrepresented parties.
     
    We are seeking experienced legal assessors to join our team on a flexible basis. We are seeking people who can commit to 120 days’ each year (but please note we are unable to guarantee a particular number of days).
     
    Many of these hearings will be virtual / remote, but some will be in person at venues in London, Coventry and/or Wales. Standard travel and accommodation costs will be met as necessary.
     
    This work may fit alongside other work as part of a portfolio practice.
     
    For this role, IT skills are essential, along with the ability to work efficiently and identify issues quickly.  
     

    Skills / Experience Required

    • Experience of acting as a legal assessor (legal advisor) to disciplinary / regulatory panels
    • Excellent knowledge of the law relevant to professional disciplinary / regulatory panels
    • Proven ability to digest large quantities of material and identify the issues in the case
    • Excellent drafting skills
    • Excellent time management skills
    • Excellent people skills, including the ability and experience to support unrepresented parties and vulnerable people (including people complaining of sexual misconduct towards them)
    • IT literate, with a proven ability to use MS Word template documents efficiently and effectively
    • Strong understanding of the importance of data security and ability to use data security tools to ensure secure transmission of data
    • Ability to commit to 120 days in hearings each year (but please note that there is no guarantee of any particular number of days’ work)
    • Ability to cover virtual/remote and in-person hearings in London, Coventry and Wales
    • Responsive to communication from clients and the Blake Morgan team
    • Eligible for a practising certificate and either:
      • Holder of a 10-year general qualification (within the meaning of section 71 of the Courts and Legal Services Act 1990); or
      • An advocate or solicitor in Scotland of at least 10 years’ standing; or
      • A member of the Bar of Northern Ireland or solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland of at least 10 years’ standing
     

    The interview process will start as soon as suitable candidates have been identified.
